POSITION FUNCTION/PURPOSE

 

AVID, Advancement Via Individual Determination, is an academic acceleration program that aims to prepare students for college.  The AVID elective teacher will work with the Principal, AVID Site Team, students, and staff across the entire campus to strengthen core instruction and increase access to and equity for college and career readiness. Provide students with appropriate learning activities and experiences designed to fulfill their potential for Intellectual, emotional, physical, and social growth.  Enable students to develop competencies and skills to function successfully in society. Implement the AVID curriculum that features writing, inquiry, collaboration, organization, reaching, note-taking, and study skills. Support students’ academic success across content areas.

 

essential functions

Duties and Responsibilities:

1.    AVID Site Coordinator responsible for documenting that all AVID essentials are met in order to assure annual certification

2.    Act as an AVID liaison with the principal, counselor, and other staff members as well as with AVID District Director.

3.    Co-Lead the building AVID site team in facilitating monthly meetings, focusing on instructional elements of AVID.

4.    When the AVID campus coordinator is also the AVID elective teacher the following roles and responsibilities apply, in addition to those listed for the coordinator:

·         Teach AVID methodologies and strategies in the classroom

·         Use the AVID curriculum to instruct students in writing, inquiry collaboration and reading.

5.     Become an instructional leader, sharing techniques and materials through formal or informal professional development to help staff members across disciplines work with all learners.

6.     Assist teachers who request help in implementing AVID strategies in their classroom and as part of their instruction.

7.     Meet monthly with AVID Site Coordinators to collaborate on K-12 AVID alignment and plan district-wide AVID professional development that matches the district improvement plan.  Disseminate information from AVID Directors          to other teachers.

8.     Facilitate the planning and scheduling of college field trips, guest speakers, and special programs with other teachers.

9.     Facilitate campus AVID parent involvement activities.

10.   AVID data collection as relates to school-wide implementation.

11.   Support recruitment of new AVID learners.

12.   Support organization and maintenance of AVID certification materials.

13.   Attend scheduled meetings with the District Director.

14.   Attend AVID trainings as directed by the principal or AVID District Director.

15.   Other duties as assigned.

 

Qualification Requirements

7.      Demonstrates the ability to motivate and counsel learners.

8.      Demonstrates the ability to promote academic success for underachieving learners.

9.      Demonstrates understanding of how the school system works in order to get what is needed for the program and the learners.

10.    Demonstrates the ability to gain the respect of and collaborate with school faculty and parents.

11.    Demonstrates the ability to work well with and to train tutors, especially in the concept of tutorial groups.

12.    Bachelor’s degree, Valid Texas teaching certificate preferred, minimum of 3 years of teacher experience and 1 year on AVID site team preferred.

Work Environment

The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.  Must be able to maintain emotional control under stress.  Occasionally required to travel to facilities within the district.  May be required to work after school and weekends.
