REPORTS TO:  Director of GT/Advanced Academics


SUPERVISES:  None


EDUCATION:   

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university
  • Valid Texas teaching certificate

EXPERIENCE:   

  • Teaching Experience (Minimum 3 years preferred), including G/T experience
  • Gifted/Talented Supplemental Certificate (preferred)
  • Initial Gifted/Talented 30-hour Professional Development required

Position Function/Purpose

The GEM 2.0 teacher works in an instructional setting with students identified for Gifted/Talented services using district-established criteria. The teacher acts as a facilitator with students and provides them with appropriate learning activities and experiences designed to help G/T students fulfill their potential for intellectual, emotional, and social grow

Essential functions

Curriculum & Instruction of Level II G/T Program (GEM 2.0): 

 

  1. Develop and revise gifted and talented curriculum for MISD Level II G/T program (GEM 2.0).
  2. Able to manage and work with students in multiple grade levels (K-6) from various campuses.
  3. Adapt the instructional environment to each gifted and talented student's differences, including flexible grouping, choice, expression styles, and multiple learning modalities.
  4. Nurture the social and emotional development of gifted and talented students.
  5. Research best practices to meet the needs of gifted and talented students and district learning outcomes.
  6. Prepare lessons that reflect accommodation for individual student differences.
  7. Present the subject matter according to the Texas Education Agency guidelines, board policies, and administrative regulations.
  8. Employ various instructional techniques and media consistent with the needs and capabilities of the student groups involved.
  9. Employ the use of technologies in the teaching/learning process.
  10. Assist in the selection of books, equipment, and other instructional materials.
  11. Assist students in analyzing and improving methods and habits of study.

 

Student Growth and Development

  1. Assess the accomplishments of students regularly and provide progress reports as required.
  2. Assume responsibility for duties, extracurricular activities, and other outside activities approved by the school.
  3. Present a positive role model for students that supports the school district's mission.
  4. Establish and maintain open lines of communication with students and their parents.
  5.  

School/Organization Climate
       1.  Create a classroom environment that is conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity

            and the interests of students.

       2.  Establish control in the classroom and administer discipline following board policies

            and administrative regulations.

       3.  Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students.

       4.  Promote a positive work environment and cordial staff morale within the school.

 

Administration and Fiscal/ Facilities Management

  1. Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect equipment, materials, and facilities.

 

School/Community Relations

  1. Establish and maintain open lines of communication with students and their parents.
  2. Maintain a professional relationship with all colleagues, students, parents, and community members.
  3. Use acceptable communication skills to present information accurately and clearly.

 

Student Management

  1. Work with faculty, and encourage student understanding of the student management system that results in positive student behavior and enhances the school climate.
  2. Ensure that school rules are uniformly observed and that student discipline is appropriate and equitable.
  3. Conduct conferences with parents, students, and teachers concerning school and student issues through active communication.
  4. Develop and communicate guidelines for student conduct.

 

Professional Growth and Development

  1. Participate in the district professional development program.
  2. Demonstrate interest and initiative in professional improvement.
  3. Observe professional and ethical standards under generally accepted community standards and the Texas Education Agency code of ethics.
  4. Complete all required training, including G/T-required training hours, i.e., the initial 30-hour G/T professional development and annual 6-hour updates.

              

Policy Implementation

  1. Keep informed of and comply with state, district, and school regulations and policies for classroom teachers.
  2. Assume responsibility for compiling, maintaining, and filing all reports, records, and other documents required.
  3. Attend and participate in division and department meetings as required.

 

Other Duties

  1. Perform other duties as assigned.
