DIVISION:  Academics

 

DEPARTMENT:  Teaching and Learning

 

REPORTS TO:  Principal, Director of Fine Arts

 

SUPERVISES:  

 

EDUCATION:   Bachelor’s degree from accredited college or university.                                                         Valid state teaching certificate, secondary or all-level music

 

EXPERIENCE:    Minimum of four years teaching with expertise in orchestral technique

 

Position Function/Purpose

Provide students with appropriate learning activities and experiences designed to fulfill their potential for intellectual, emotional, physical, and social growth.  Enable students to develop competencies and skills to function successfully in society.

 

Major Responsibilities

 

Program Planning

  

      1.         Direct high school orchestra, soloists, and ensembles.

      2.         Establish performance requirements, enforce academic requirements, and verify each student’s eligibility to participate in orchestra, extracurricular performances.

      3.         Provide for orchestra participation at extracurricular events.

      4.         Arrange transportation, lodging, and meals for out of town events.

      5.         Comply with federal and state laws, State Board of Education rules, UIL rules, and board policy.

      6.         Organize and support booster club activities.

      7.         Obtain and use evaluative findings (including student achievement data) to determine program effectiveness and ensure that the program renewal is continuous and responds to student needs.

      8.         Make recommendations to improve program.

 

 

   Budget and Inventory

 

      9.         Ensure that programs are cost effective and funds are managed wisely.

      10.      Compile budgets and cost estimates based on documented program needs.

      11.      Coordinate fundraising activities and manage funds.

      12.      Maintain current inventory of all fixed assets within the department/program.

      13.      Oversee process of cleaning, repairing, and storing all equipment and uniforms.

  

    Instruction

 

     14.   Develop and implement plans for instrumental music program for the high school                                 

               orchestra as well as the junior high feeder bands and show written evidence of  

              preparation as required.

     15.       Prepare lessons that reflect accommodations for individual student differences.

      16.      Present subject matter according to guidelines established by the Texas Education Agency, board policies, and administrative regulations.

      17.      Plan and use appropriate instructional and learning strategies, activities, materials, and equipment that reflect understanding of the learning styles and needs of students.

      18.      Conduct ongoing assessments of student achievement through formal and informal testing.

      19.      Create an environment conducive to learning and appropriate for the physical, social, and emotional development of students.

 

     Student Management

 

      20.      Apply and enforce student discipline in accordance with the Student Code of Conduct and student handbook. 

      21.      Accompany and supervise students on all out of town trips.

      22.      Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.

 

     Communication   

 

      23.      Establish and maintain open communication by conducting conferences with parents, students, principals, and teachers.

      24.      Maintain professional relationships with colleagues, students, parents, and community members.

                 

    Personnel

 

      25.      Monitor the performance of assistant directors and feeder junior high directors.

      26.      Communicate concerns of assistant and feeder directors to the appropriate principal and the Director of Fine Arts.

 

 

   Qualification Requirements

   Minimum Education/Certification:

 

?  Bachelor's degree from accredited college or university.

?  Valid state teaching certificate, secondary or all-level music.

?  Minimum of four years teaching with expertise in orchestral technique.

 

    Special Knowledge/Skills:

 

?  Knowledge of overall operation of instrumental program

?  Ability to manage budget

?  Knowledge of state and UIL policies governing orchestra

?  Ability to interpret policy, procedures, and data

?  Strong communication, public relations, and interpersonal skills

 

    Minimum Experience:

 

?  Minimum of four years teaching preferred.

   Mental Demands/Physical Demands/Environment Factors:

   Maintain emotional control under stress.  Frequent standing, stooping, bending, pulling and

   pushing.  Move small stacks of textbooks, media equipment, desks, and other classroom

   equipment.
