Position Function/Purpose

The police department enforces the provision of Section 21.483 of the Texas Education Code, the Texas Penal Code,

and the rules and regulations promulgated by the MISD School Board for the safety and welfare of students,

employees, and property. The Police Sergeant will be responsible for overseeing criminal investigations and for further investigation of all felonies and other such misdemeanors that require extended investigation. In addition, the Sergeant will be responsible for supervising officers and corporals, scheduling, approving reports, use of force reporting, and all daily activities occurring on school campuses.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

 

1.   Patrolling MISD property in a manner prescribed by the Chief of Police.

2.   Remains on call as a duty officer to respond to alarms as required.

3.   Responds to all alarms or requests for assistance as required.

4.   Prepares and submits written reports of activities, incidents, and other security/safety violations or

      Problems.

5.   Applies MISD security policies and procedures to situations involving acts of crime, alarm activations,

      and emergency situations.

6.   Works cooperatively with other law enforcement agencies.

7.   Inspects MISD property for compliance with security and safety requirements, makes recommendations

      to building administrators for improvements.

8.   Assists in conducting investigations and in providing written reports of incidents

9.   Works days, nights, weekends, and/or holidays as duties are scheduled.

10. Works closely with students, teachers, and staff to gain support for the MISD security and safety program

11. Investigates all crimes assigned; questions witnesses, victims, and suspects to determine factual material

      and provide evidence of leads.

12. Directs activities at the crime scene to assist victims; obtains clues, gathers and preserves evidences.

      Ensures that photographs and fingerprints of all persons arrested who are charged with violations are

      included in the records.

13. Records progress of investigations and maintain informational files on crimes and suspects.

14. Regularly updates immediate supervisor about the progress of investigations and requests additional

      instructions when further progress appears impossible.

15. Communicates with the complainant or victim periodically to apprise him or her of the state of the

      investigation. Informs the complainant or victim in all cases that are resolved by arrest.

16. Reviews departmental reports and other data pertaining to criminal cases.

17. Assists police officers in the apprehension of suspects or offenders, and generally act as liaison officer

      between the Department and all similar bureaus or units in other police departments and law enforcement

      agencies.

18. Files application for and reviews all search warrants obtained by any officer or unit of the Department.

19. Safeguards all property recovered; tags and stamps all lost, stolen, or found property including controlled

       substances that come into the department’s possession. Ensures that all evidence is properly tracked and

      disposed as released by courts.

20. Assists in the preparation of cases for court. Prepares assigned cases for court and charges or responses to

      charges and procedures. Obtains court disposition of all cases in which he is involved.

21. Dept. training officer. Responsible for the maintenance and upkeep of training records for all TCOLE.

      licensed officers ensuring that all officers are current in all required training.

22. Other duties as assigned by the supervisor.

QUALIFICATIONS

 

1. Intermediate Peace Officer Certificate in Texas. (TCOLE)

2. Minimum of 5 years of total police service.

3. Minimum of 1 year of service with MISD Police Department.

4. U.S. Citizen.

5. Be familiar with MISD operations.

6. Training or experience in law enforcement.

7. Knowledge and experience of electronic intrusion detection systems.

8. Current fulltime certified Police Officer.

9. Must be able to demonstrate skills in leadership, interpersonal skills, ability to read and write legibly,

    formulate investigative reports, and speak clearly.

10. Valid Texas Driver’s License and acceptable driving record; must adhere to Midland ISD’s vehicle safety and use program.

 

KNOWLEDGE

 

1.   Approved principles and practices as well as laws and ordinances governing police work.

2.   Laws and departmental procedures surrounding the handling of suspects, crime scene control, care of

      prisoners, and the presentation of evidence in court.

3.   Behavioral patterns of criminals and their associates, modus operandi and criminal hang-outs.

4.   Work with some degree of independence and to execute duties firmly, tactfully, and impartially.

5.   Understand and execute difficult oral and written directions.

6.   Prepare clear and comprehensive reports.

7.   React quickly and calmly in emergencies.

8.   Develop and sustain positive working relationships with other employees, other law enforcement officers and the    general public.

9.   Utilize investigator techniques and equipment.

10. Operate and care of firearms, photography, and other equipment.

 

 

REQUIREMENTS

 

1. Sergeant must live within an acceptable distance approved by the Chief of Police, able to respond to

    emergency call outs.

2. Maintain a working phone

3. Use and maintain a MISD Police vehicle

4. Be able to work a flexible schedule

5. Remain “on call” when scheduled and requested

The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. Must be able to maintain emotional control under stress.

Occasionally required to travel to facilities within the district. May be required to work after school and weekends.
