Position Function/Purpose

Ensure safe and orderly transportation of students on the assigned route. Operate a school bus that transports students and other authorized personnel to and from schools or other designated locations.

Major Responsibilities

Vehicle Operation

  1. Follow the assigned route and adhere to established schedules.
  2. Drive bus to and from extracurricular activities.
  3. Check the bus for mechanical defects before and after each operation and notify the supervisor of needed repairs.
  4. Report all accidents, vehicle damage, student injuries, and mechanical failures. Complete required reports.
  5. Keep the assigned bus clean and fueled.

Student Management

  1. Supervise students while they board and leave the bus and cross the street.
  2. Communicate with teachers and parents on a daily basis regarding student behavior while on the bus.
  3. Maintain discipline; report student discipline problems to appropriate administrators.
  4. Instruct students on safe riding rules and regulations.

Safety

  1. Observe all traffic laws and safety regulations for school buses.
  2. Inspect the bus by checking fuel, oil, water, tires, lights, brakes, and steering to ensure the bus can be operated safely before driving.
  3. Ensure proper condition of emergency equipment, such as first aid kit, fire extinguisher, flags, fuses, crow bar, and reflector.
  4. Correct unsafe conditions in the work area that could cause an accident and inform the supervisor of any conditions that are not correctable immediately.
  5. Report any hazardous conditions along the route.

 

 

Other

  1. Operate two-way radio equipment to communicate with the transportation office.
  2. Work irregular hours as needed.
  3. Attend and complete the required training program to maintain safety certification.
  4. Keeps records on bus mileage, gas and oil consumption, and number of passengers transported.
  5. Demonstrate a knowledge of Driving safety rules
  6. Demonstrate the ability to work well with fellow personnel
  7. Assume responsibility for the care, disinfecting of related equipment of the bus.
  8. Execute DOT inspections and Pre Trip and Post Trip inspections
  9. In – service Training – will need to obtain a minimum of 65.5 hours per school year.
  10. Follow policies and procedures regarding student bus discipline
  11. Demonstrate punctuality when performing duties
  12. Follow policies and procedures related to absence from duty
  13. Responsible for safely loading and unloading students, following health and safety protocol, and performing emergency evacuation drills.
  14. Responsible for the assignment of seats for students and oversee the student rosters
  15. Responsible for servicing and upkeep of buses and performing exit checks.
  16. Demonstrate a positive attitude and provide great customer service when working with students and parents
  17. Operate all Midland ISD vehicles for routing and extracurricular purposes.
  18. Demonstrate the ability to perform duties as assigned by supervisor
  19. Perform all other duties as assigned by Director of Transportation

 

Qualification Requirements

  1. Valid Texas commercial driver’s license (Class B), Passenger and School Bus Endorsement.
  2. Must be 18 years of age
  3. Ability to pass alcohol and drug test
  4. Ability to read and write English
  5. Ability to complete required bus driver safety training
  6. Ability to obtain a Texas School Bus Certification
  7. Ability to Pass an annual Physical
  8. Ability to follow written and verbal instructions
  9. Ability to communicate effectively
  10. Knowledge of student discipline procedure
  11. Ability to manage student behavior
  12. Ability to operate bus
  13. Minor computer skills needed
  14. Physical examination to determine fitness to drive a bus
  15. Valid Texas Drivers License and acceptable driving record; must adhere to Midland ISD’s vehicle safety and use program
